There was this little moment – a big moment, actually, just very brief – during Rachel and Justin’s ceremony that made me wish so badly that my husband was right there beside me. You see, after (almost!) 15 years of marriage, whenever I ask John why he loves me, he can’t really tell me. He simply grabs my hand and says, “I do love you! I just do. You make me happy.” And I’ll be honest, for the longest time, this really bothered me. I wanted to be showered with specifics! But after 15 years, I’ve come to realize that John’s answer isn’t poor communication. In fact, John is saying exactly what he means and his statement is the most freeing thing in the world. On the days when I’m frumpy and grumpy and don’t look my best, he loves me because… he does. And when I’m off my game after a late wedding and he has to be Super Dad Sunday morning after being Super Dad all day Saturday, he still loves me because… I make him happy? Apparently so.
So when, during her vows, Rachel looked up at Justin with a face that was absolutely glowing and simply said, “You make me happy”, I didn’t think it was trite or simple. My eyes filled up with tears, and I wished John was there so I could lean over and give him a quick kiss. I knew what she meant: there is something about Justin’s essence that fills her with peace and calm and she doesn’t want to live about it. I know she doesn’t mean that she’s happy all the time, but that she feels safe to take her unhappiness to Justin and that being around him makes her happier than she would be without him.
I know this because I know my John, and I know our marriage, but also because of what you see between Justin and Rachel. This is a couple that takes one another exactly as they are. And now, as their Ketubah attests, they will always choose the happiness of being together, even through momentary unhappiness. So honored to be there Saturday, Rachel and Justin. Thanks for making me cry… and reminding me to give John a kiss in his sleep as soon as I got home! 😉
